About
Laal is a language isolate spoken in the Southern region of Chad. It is spoken in two villages (Gori and Damtar) on the banks of the Chari River by around 750 people. There may be other speakers in towns nearby, but they are not documented. Many younger Laal speakers move to other villages, and they fully transition to the languages spoken there, so Laal is only spoken by older generations. Laal has no written alphabet, but it has been transcribed by linguists using the International Phonetic Alphabet. The last count of native speakers was in the early 2000s, so it is possible that this language is now extinct.
