About
Sandawe is a language isolate spoken in Southeast Africa and Tanzania. It contains clicking consonants similar to languages in the Khoe family, but its grammar and words distinguish it as a unique language that has no relatives. It is spoken by the Sandawe people, who are also regarded as having the oldest known human lineage. Most Sandawe speakers also speak Swahili, and they read and write in Swahili rather than in Sandawe. Sandawe is rarely written, though it does have an official written alphabet and form. Now, many Sandawe speakers are beginning to use Swahili as a main language, and rarely use Sandawe in daily communication.
