About
Tamazight is an Afroasiatic language family that contains languages spoken in Morocco and Algeria. It is mainly spoken in small Amazigh enclaves. The languages included are similar, yet differences between each language can lead to problems communicating over the language barrier. Although the language became an official language of Morocco in 2011 and is still taught in schools, it is still definitely endangered. With the increasing urban population in Morocco, the language is being learned less as Arabic becomes the main method of communication in the country. Now, the language is only natively spoken by the older generation. Children do not learn it as their first language, but it was introduced into the school system in 2003.
